This
week blog features the NAEYC and DEC Ideals that are meaningful to me and are
significant to my professional life.
NAEYC stands for National Association for the Education of Young
Children. DEC stands for The Division of
Early Childhood. Both of these
organizations discuss the ethical and professional aspects of the Early
Childhood field.
The
following are the Ideals found in the NAEYC Code of Ethics.
I-1.1—To
be familiar with the knowledge base of early childhood care and education and
to stay informed through continuing education and training. (NAEYC)
I-1.3—To recognize and respect the unique qualities, abilities, and
potential of each child. (NAEYC)
I-1.5—To
create and maintain safe and healthy settings that foster children’s social,
emotional, cognitive, and physical development and that respect their dignity and
their contributions. (NAEYC)
These ideals are important to me
because I fell that I should always stay informed and continue my
education. Knowledge is progressive and
should never stop. In the State of
Florida we are required to complete 10 hours of continual education on an
annual basis. I always complete more
hours because I am eager to learn and be a professional. I also believe that we should treat each
child as an individual and not use a “cookie-cutter” approach to
education. All children learn a
different way and if educators realize this they can reach every child in their
classroom effectively. I believe that
environments must be kept safe and healthy.
Children learn when they feel safe.
Keeping the environment healthy will cut down on the spread of
infectious diseases.
The following are the Ideals Important to me in the DEC Code of
Ethics
Professional and
Interpersonal Behavior
1. We shall demonstrate in our
behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human
potential of each child. (DEC)
Professional
Collaboration
2. We shall honor and respect the
rights, knowledge, and skills of the multidisciplinary colleagues with whom we
work recognizing their unique contributions to children, families, and the
field of early childhood special education. (DEC)
Responsive
Family Centered Practices
1. We shall demonstrate our
respect and appreciation for all families’ beliefs, values, customs,
languages, and culture relative
to their nurturance and support of their children toward achieving
meaningful and relevant priorities and outcomes
families’ desire for themselves and their children. (DEC)
The DEC ideals are important to me because again we
should respect that each child is unique.
I don’t think that can be stressed too much. Every child learns at their own rate and
their learning achievements should acknowledge as such. I believe that we should show respect for
our colleagues and use their skills to help us reach the one goal of educating
the children in our care. Lastly, I
believe that all families should feel a sense of belonging in the child care
despite their beliefs or customs.
Educators should seek to learn each family’s customs and cultures to
ensure that they are not disrespected or discriminated against in any way.

We both chose I-1.1, thats a good choice. It gives a good understanding how delicate life is for a child. Some take childhood for granted. I glad to know we both on the same page on early childhood! keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI think if all educators truly respected children as individuals, respecting their individual learning styles they would be less frustrated and more able to enjoy the work they are doing. When children are met where they are and moved forward at their pace it is a joy to see the progress.
ReplyDeleteI also chose 1-1.1, this code should evenutally be meaningful to us all. Without the knowledge and understanding of early childhood and education, we are not beneficial to the children and the communities in which we serve.
ReplyDeleteJaninee,
ReplyDeleteIt was a great pleasure to meet you through the Walden's EDUC-6005 course. I would like to thank you for the inspirational discussions, and comments that you have posted on my broad. When we started the educational journey, I was lost on the blog set-up. You opened the door, and told the class how to operated the blog.
